Boston: Dream destination of every marathon runner

10.08.2023 - Jonas
Back in 2013, I stood on the start line of a World Marathon Majors race at the Berlin Marathon for the first time as a then 19-year-old. I was impressed by how big and imposing the Berlin Marathon really is. A good two years later, the biggest marathon in the world, the legendary New York City Marathon, followed in November 2015. With the three starts at the London Marathons 2021 to 2023, I had done half of the six Majors in autumn 2021. Tokyo feels very far away, but participating in the marathons in Chicago and Boston is only a matter of time. I've been hearing nothing but the best about the Boston Marathon in particular for years. The race must be unique. It was therefore brilliant that, due to my research on the sustainability and marketing of major running events, I now had the chance to participate in my extensive research work at the world-renowned annual conference of the Academy of Management, which this time took place in Boston, and to exchange ideas with numerous researchers from all over the world.

Even though the research conference was a top priority for me, I used the remaining time to take an early morning walk along the Charles River, for example. This takes you past not only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but also the Museum of Science, which is also highly recommended, but which I unfortunately didn't have time to visit. The absolute highlight of the loop? The section on the Charles River Esplanade on the southern bank of the Charles River. Running through this man-made park, built into the river, was pure fun. I also loved the view of the skyline from the northern bank of the river.

My conclusion? If you're in Boston, you should definitely go running on both sides of the Charles River and see the finish line of the marathon in front of the Boston Public Library. Even without the Boston Marathon, there's always that Boston Marathon feeling in the air.
