North Coast 500: A Scottish Dream

20.08.2021 - Jonas
Ever heard of the North Coast 500? The North Coast 500 is a 516-mile circular road that runs from Inverness, the largest city in the Scottish Highlands, along the coast of the Northern Highlands. Natalie and I recently travelled the North Coast 500 with a rental car and tent.

. Even though we had already heard many positive things, we were more than thrilled. The nature in the north is simply wonderful. Again and again during our trip we were in places of which there are few or none in many countries. On the North Coast 500, however, there were plenty of them. To increase the adventure factor, we decided to camp wild throughout. Tent at CeannabeinneWhile this was quite difficult on the first two days on the east coast, where it is only possible in a few places, the camping experience on the following days was unique. We found the most beautiful camping spot at Ceannabeinne Beach in the northwest. Camping there was better than staying in the best hotel.

Even those who don't like camping are right on the North Coast 500. Driving along the coast day after day for several days and admiring the outstandingly beautiful Highlands nature is - if the weather is right - a great experience and perfect relaxation. Our highlights included Dunrobin Castle & Gardens, Hill O'Many Stanes, an endurance run on Dunnet Beach, camping on Ceannabeinne Beach and an endurance run on the lonely road to Rua Reidh Lighthouse with (on the way back) a view towards the Isle of Skye. The famous pass road at Applecross was also a place we would definitely visit again, despite only five degrees Celsius at the highest point. All in all, we can only recommend an NC500 trip to everyone!
