"Snazzy design", I thought to myself when I held the Hoka Cielo X1 in my hands for the first time. The new competition shoe from the US running shoe brand is indeed a real eye-catcher. With its bright colours and interesting sole construction, it is definitely a rarity that is not only impressive on the outside.
I tested the Cielo X1 for the first time a while ago in wet, wintry weather. You could feel the push from the very first step. I also find that the shoe rolls really well. Looking at the pronounced rocker construction, it's not surprising. The Cielo X1 really comes into its own on longer distances and flat routes.
A special feature of the shoe is the laces, which are made of an interesting material, but offer an exceptionally good hold if you tie them well. How good?
So good that I almost couldn't get the shoes off again. Another plus point of the Cielo X1? The space in the toe box. It's neither too big nor too small. The wearing comfort is great because of this, but also because of the tongue integrated into the upper material.
The only weak point of the Hoka Cielo X1 is that the shoe could be a few grams lighter. While the additional weight is hardly noticeable on long distances, it is noticeable on shorter distances such as a 5K.
All in all, however, the Hoka Cielo X1 is a very good competition shoe that can be classified at the highest level in terms of rolling behaviour, for example. If you are looking for a visually striking competition shoe with a good push for longer distances, the Hoka Cielo X1 is a good choice.
