Test: Skechers Razor Excess

05.05.2022 - Natalie
The Skechers Razor Excess is a lighter alternative to familiar shoe all-rounders. The Razor Excess left a first-class impression on my numerous test runs, whether fast or slow, short or long.

Are you new to the Skechers Razor Excess? You should have heard of this shoe. For example, it's not as well known as the Adidas Boston 9, but the shoe weighs only 169 grams in size 37, which is 31 grams less than the Boston 9, even though both shoes have a comparable range of use. Even the Adidas SL20, which is significantly less cushioned than the Razor Excess, is superior to the Skechers all-rounder in terms of weight by seven grams. Considering that average runners' feet are slightly bigger than mine, the difference is even greater.

However, the Skechers Razor Excess cannot only be reduced to its low weight. In the beginning, I had the assumption that I should use the shoe best for faster Skechers Razer Ecxess endurance runs. However, as time went on, I also tested it at even higher but also slower speeds, as well as over longer distances. I still can't say which training session I would recommend the shoe the least. Taking pace and distance into account, the Skechers Razor Excess actually cut a good figure throughout. Although it is slightly inferior to even faster models such as the Skechers GoRun Speed Elite Hyper for intervals or even more cushioned shoes for comfortable runs here and there, it plays a good role throughout. The only thing to note is that the shoe should ideally be worn on asphalt. Although it can also cope with light natural and forest trails, you notice that its outsole and elements that contribute to the shoe's stability are not made for more demanding surfaces such as trails.

Interesting upper and premium midsole

One component of the Skechers Razor Excess that I find particularly appealing is the lightweight and almost artistic upper. This reminds me a little of the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next%, but it resembles a little less of a slide and also looks a little more normal. I like the design and the material, although the breathability could be increased with the choice of a different upper. The lacing of the shoe is comfortable. However, the prerequisite is to buy the shoe in the right size. Since the Skechers Razor Excess is quite large and long, it is recommended to take a half or even a full shoe size smaller.

The Razor Excess also scores points for its midsole, which is made of Skechers' well-known Hyper Burst foam. It is this ingeniously light midsole material that enables the US manufacturer to develop shoes that are sometimes significantly ahead of those of competing manufacturers in terms of weight. When running, the midsole offered good cushioning both at higher speeds and during relaxed, long runs without costing me too much energy by sinking in too much.

For the outsole, Skechers also relies on a comparatively minimalist Goodyear outsole for the Razor Excess. This offers good grip even on wet roads and ensures good durability.

An all-rounder for medium to fast runners

So who is the Skechers Razor Excess best suited for? I can recommend the shoe, especially to runners with sufficient stability in the ankle area. While the Razor Excess offers a sufficient level of stability, its strengths lie more in its almost unbeatable versatility and lightweight. Medium to fast runners tends to have more fun with the Skechers Razor Excess than slower runners. The shoe can be used for casual endurance running, long runs, interval sessions and tempo endurance running. As I mentioned, the Razor Excess is a real all-rounder that is also the perfect shoe, for example, if you are travelling and only want to take one or two pairs of shoes with you. Skechers convinced me with the Razor Excess.
