August: the month Edinburgh explodes

30.08.2019 - Natalie
Year after year, tourists from all over the world are drawn to Edinburgh in August. The days are long, the temperatures warm but not too hot, and the cultural offerings unbeatable. It's no wonder that around half a million people turn into about a million people living or visiting the city at this time of year. For people who know the city even in quieter months, it seems to almost explode in August.

The reason for this is primarily the various festivals that take place at this time. The Fringe Festival in particular, which is the world's largest cultural festival, brings artists from all over the world to Edinburgh. Over 55,000 performances and more than 3,500 shows make the Fringe Festival a four-week long, colourful cultural party of the highest order.

Even though we were primarily occupied with finding accommodation during our first days in Edinburgh, we were able to experience the festival for the second time since 2016. Our special highlight was the visit of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade. Together with almost 9,000 other people, we marvelled at the performances of over 1,000 artists for around two and a half hours, accompanied by a spectacular light show and an equally spectacular fireworks display.
