Running

Almost 56 kilometres for those who can't do it

10.05.2020 - Jonas
“Run for those who can't!“ that is the motto of the Wings for Life World Run, in which thousands of people around the world run for cancer research every year. I took part for the fourth time in a row this year, and Natalie for the third time. In 2017, we took part in the Flagship Run in Munich, in 2018 I ran together with several teammates in my home country in and around Gengenbach, and in 2019 we took part in the organised App Run in Hamburg together with our friend and teammate Patrick.

Conceivably unfortunate, the Wings for Life World Run was in the middle of the exam period of the second trimester this year. Nevertheless, we wanted to be part of the great movement and contribute to the success of the world's largest charity run. For this we not only donated, but also motivated our teammates and other runners and of course also ran a few kilometres.

While Natalie ran her planned 23 kilometre long run as part of the Wings for Life World Run 2020 in Meadows Park, the run for me was a bit longer. I was able to finish the marathon in under 2:45 hours. After that came what I had previously only known from the Wings for Life World Run 2017 in Munich, namely the kilometres that make a marathon an ultramarathon.

Although the Catcher Car, which only chased the runners virtually this year due to the cancellation of the 13 planned Flagship Runs, has been running faster since 2019 and especially catches up with runners who go beyond the marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres, I was able to reach the 50-kilometre mark for the second time after 2017.Back then, I finished 12th in Munich with 53.61 kilometres and 129th in the global standings. This year, it went on for me for exactly one more Meadows lap, which is about 2.3 kilometres long. The Catcher Car caught me after 55.91 kilometres. Rank 10 out of 77,000 runners worldwide!

The almost 25 laps in the Meadows were a special experience, which I had not expected myself, because I had never thought that I would run the longest race of my career so far. Together with our team colleagues from Roadrunners Südbaden, we covered more than 300 kilometres and raised a three-digit sum; worldwide, more than 920,000 kilometres were run and 2.8 million euros were collected.
