Gengenbach is a must-see, especially when it is December and the historic town hall of my home town of Gengenbach is once again transformed into the "treasure chest of fantasy", as the world's largest Advent calendar is also called. Every evening at 6 p.m., after a short presentation, another window of the town hall and thus of the world's largest Advent calendar house will be opened and a new picture will appear. Pictures by world-famous artists such as Marc Chagall, Tomi Ungerer, Andy Warhol and Otmar Alt have already been represented in Gengenbach.
You can stroll in all three directions from the town hall or the market square and find numerous Christmas market stalls. A tarte flambée, a mulled wine or a children's punch, the choice is wide and there is something for everyone. The Gengenbach Christmas market also invites you to linger in a special atmosphere around the daily opening of the Advent calendar. It is recommended to come especially during the week, as the crowds are particularly heavy at weekends. Please note that the window of the next day is always opened. For the last time, the Advent calendar will be opened on 23 December.
Whether the Gengenbach town hall is still the largest Advent calendar in the world is not entirely clear. But for us, the Gengenbach Advent calendar in the middle of the beautiful historic old town is without a doubt the most beautiful and therefore the number 1 in the world.
