Test: Hoka One One Clifton Edge

20.10.2020 - Jonas
With the Hoka One One TenNine, the brand launched what is perhaps the most eye catching shoe of the year in terms of design at the beginning of the year. However, this unusual model is not suitable for everyday use. With the Hoka One One Clifton Edge, Hoka One One has now released an interesting shoe that is a little reminiscent of the TenNine, but can also be seen as an endurance running shoe suitable for everyday use. During extensive testing I took a closer look at the Clifton Edge and gained interesting knowledge.

Already at the official presentation of the shoe the apparently unforgettable running feeling was emphasised. The main reason for this is said to be the new Ultra Grip foam, which is supposed to raise the usual first-class cushioning to a new level. With the corresponding expectations, I laced the shoes and started to run with ease. From the first moment on, however, the shoe felt different than I thought. While I had expected to sink noticeably into the cushioning material with every step, it became more and more apparent that this time the developers had found an excellent mix of comfortable cushioning and a certain directness. After a few test runs I have to say that I consider the shoe with the actually found cushioning characteristics to be much better than an even more cushioned version of the shoe would have been. In this case the Clifton Edge would probably only be a recommendation for slow, regenerative runs. However, its direct running feeling makes it ideal for slow to medium speed training runs, which can easily include a few speed bumps.

Hoke Clifton Edge As already mentioned, the design of the Clifton Edge is reminiscent of the TenNine. Some features of the shoe, which is only recommended for downhill running, have also been handed over to the Clifton Edge. For example, the heel not only looks exciting, but also provides a smoother tread and better rollover. If you don't roll over the heel in flat terrain, or only barely, you will notice this effect at the latest when you run downhill with the Clifton Edge. However, the shape of the outsole also has a noticeable effect on the walking sensation in a second way. The comparatively wide construction of this sole ensures that you run noticeably more stable, as the shoe corrects slightly with every step when you put it on.

What other features does the Hoka One One Clifton Edge offer? The Clifton Edge scores in a number of ways. For example, the new vertical pull loop makes it easier to put on the shoe. In addition, the midsole design, Advanced Early Stage Meta-Rocker Geometry, promotes a more efficient running mechanism. At the same time, the TPU yarn provides targeted support on the forefoot and along the eyelets. The entire upper material looks very high quality and durable. Those who are familiar with other Hoka running shoes can look forward to a shoe that can be placed between the classic Clifton and the Rincon when buying the Clifton Edge.

In conclusion, the Hoka One One Clifton Edge not only scores with its innovative design, but also offers additional stability thanks to its outsole. The biggest surprise for many runners will probably be the light, springy running feel, where you don't sink into the shoe as much as you might expect. Consequently, the shoe is suitable for all types of endurance running up to the long runs in preparation for a marathon.
