Six double victories to start the new decade

18.02.2020 - Natalie
Jonas and I started the new decade with six double victories. After Jonas finished first over ten kilometres for the third time at the Schwaibach New Year's Eve run and I managed to secure my sixth New Year's Eve run victory in a row, we decided to kick off 2020 with five parkruns, a different parkrun every Saturday between 4 January and 1 February.

. To kick things off, we tackled the undulating Pollok parkrun in Glasgow. Only four days after the New Year's Eve run at home, Jonas even ran under 17 minutes on the anything but fast course and thus deserved to win. I took it a bit slower, but still finished sixth overall out of 413 runners. A week later we swapped roles. Jonas started in wet and stormy conditions quite leisurely, I was a bit more offensive. As Jonas then turned up the pace on the second half, he finished first man after 17:11 minutes and I first woman after 18:37 minutes, which meant fourth place overall on this day.

. Parkrun number three we ran in Edinburgh. The Portobello parkrun attracted more participants than ever before on 18 January. Nearly 500 runners took part in the 241st Portobello parkrun, leaving little room for laps on the sometimes icy course. In 17:04 minutes and 18:41 minutes we nevertheless snatched parkrun double victory number three. The fourth followed seven days later at Meadowmill parkrun in Prestonpans, where the Scottish Half, one of the most famous half marathons in Scotland, starts year after year. For the second time we started at this parkrun, which is more like a cross-country run in many parts. Jonas won in 17:02 minutes, the second fastest time in the history of the event. I ended up in third place overall shortly after.

After several weeks of challenging courses and conditions, we were hoping for good weather for Edinburgh parkrun, which runs along Cramond Beach. Unfortunately, a fast first half was followed by 2.5 slow final kilometres. While there was a strong wind on the first half, you had to fight against it on the way back, which made it almost impossible to reach a really fast finish time. Nevertheless, we managed to cover the distance the fastest and were happy about double victory number five in the new year and double victory number six in a row.
